In September, ABB launched a brand-new charging station design that will be the world's fastest. The new station is known as the Terra 360. What does this public charging station offer, and how will it help you get more miles behind you? At Phil Long Dealerships, we want to ensure you get maximum enjoyment from your EV, which is why we are so excited about the latest technologies, such as those offered by ABB. Let's look at what this charging station provides, how it benefits you and why your car might not need a fast charge.
How Fast is Fast?
The ABB charger can provide more than 60 miles of driving range with compatible vehicles in fewer than three minutes. Plus, the charger will work with up to four vehicles simultaneously, reducing how many chargers are needed.
When and Where It Will Be Available
You can keep an eye out for the ABB Terra fast chargers by following this Colorado website. It lists all of the available EV chargers in Colorado so that you can plan your trip accordingly. The charging stations are being rolled out across the country, ensuring every region takes advantage of the high-tech equipment.
Can EVs Handle This Fast Charge?
The Terra 360 offers a 360 kW capacity. However, there aren't many EVs on the road right now that can handle this charge level. For now, the closest is the Lucid Air, which allows for 300 kW fast-charging, and the Porsche Taycan, which allows 270 kW. Additionally, the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 can only charge up to 250 kW. The next one on the list is the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which has a 232 kW fast-charge rating.
Additionally, extreme charging levels aren't ideal for the electric car battery. As an example, Porsche utilizes a preservation setting with the Plug & Charge system that reduces its power input from 270 kW to 200 kW. Knowing that the company provided this only proves that fast charging isn't ideal for the EV battery. Studies have also proven that fast charging to an extreme level doesn't always save you time.
Still, companies continue trying to be at the forefront of the charging industry. For this reason, Tesla is also considering upgrading the average Supercharged V3 network to move from 250 kW to 300 kW instead. Likely, we will soon see cars that can handle this extreme charging level.
