Defining Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (EV)

Hybrid cars come in different varieties, mild hybrid, series hybrid, and plug-in hybrid, otherwise known as the PHEV. However, all these cars come with an internal combustion engine and electric motors, and the gas engine takes over when the electric motor can't supply power.

In comparison, the electric car doesn't have an internal combustion engine and only relies on electric power. If the charge gets too low, the car won't run, and this vehicle needs to be plugged in to gain more control.

How Does Each Work? (Hybrids, Plug-in Hybrids, and EVs)

The hybrid vehicle has an electric motor that is either charged by the engine or regenerative braking. With a plug-in hybrid, these ways of charging exist, but they can also be plugged in. On the other hand, an electric vehicle only regains its charge by being plugged into a wall or a charging station.

Vehicle Maintenance

Hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles still contain an internal combustion engine. The same level of maintenance is required with these vehicles, if not more because there's now an electric motor. With an electric vehicle, there's no internal combustion engine. For this reason, you no longer need oil changes, fluid flushes, and other maintenance. Some maintenance is still required, but less than the gas-powered car.

Do You Own or Rent?

You may need somewhere to charge an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle if you rent your home. It might be best to drive a hybrid in this situation. However, if you own your home, you can easily drive either option. You may need to make some modifications to a plug.

Tax Incentives

With electric and hybrid vehicles, there are some federal tax credits available. You can get money back on the purchase if your vehicle is included. You can also get further credits in some states, so check what's available.

Pros and Cons

Hybrid vehicles will continue emitting some gases, and electric vehicles don't emit any emissions, making them a better choice for the environment. Hybrids also tend to be cheaper than electric cars but require more maintenance. All batteries can be costly, so it's wise to price them before choosing a model to drive.

Let's look at the pros and cons of each type in depth.

Hybrids

Hybrid vehicles have superior gas mileage to traditional gas-powered vehicles, with fewer emissions than gas ones. You don't need to plug in the hybrid vehicle; you can fill it at a standard gas station.

However, it will cost you a few thousand more dollars over the gas-only type. Many also have a CVT, which is less reliable than traditional automatic transmission.

Plug-in Hybrids

The plug-in hybrid can drive a short distance on electric power only. It also gets excellent fuel economy and can be eligible for tax rebates. However, you will pay even more for these versus the traditional hybrid. You also need to plug it in to charge the battery.

Electric Vehicles

You won't have to purchase gas anymore with an electric vehicle. Instead, you must plug in at home or a public charging station. Additionally, these cars don't have tailpipe emissions and cost less to maintain. Because there's no gas-powered engine, they are incredibly quiet to operate.

On the flip side, they are more expensive than the other options. You may need help traveling long distances if there aren't chargers on the way. Plus, charging is only sometimes convenient because you have to wait for the fill-up. Additionally, accessory usage and ambient weather can alter the driving range.
